Massimo Abbati is the 2023 Lotus Cup Italia champion thanks to an incredible weekend at Misano World Circuit, conquering the win in both races and thus winning the overall laurels and the one reserved for Hankook Trophy drivers.
If it was a weekend to remember for Abbati, misfortune instead struck one who has been one of the great protagonists of the season, Sergio Galbusera: after some difficulties in qualifying, the provisional leader managed to limit the damage in Race 1 with an excellent second place ahead of the returning Tarabini. In Race 2 however, seven minutes from the checkered flag and with the win in his hands, Galbusera was forced to raise the white flag due to the damages on his Elise caused by a contact with another car, following which a forced stop was necessary to the pits for bodywork repairs, thus making any chance of winning the championship disappear.
Thus finishing on the podium in Race 2, behind Abbati, were Giuseppe De Virgilio (redeemed himself from the unsuccessful first heat) and Stefano Moretti, the latter champion in the Master and Lotus Gold Cup classes.
At the foot of the podium, great battle in both races with Jacopo Battisti, Emanuele Romani and Francesco Gebbia as protagonists while Pietro Aiello scored other important points after his excellent debut at Mugello. Weekend also positive for the debutant Marco Gianesini, who closed the weekend with eighth place in Race 2.
Now it’s time for celebrations for Lotus Cup Italia, with the Lotus Cup Night and the awards ceremony for the protagonists already set for Saturday 2 December.
